Demo of Male Springer
You are invited to have a go at painting this demonstration, but must give credit on any works using this demonstration to say ‘after a painting by Marie Baker’. I retain the copy right of this painting and demonstration, which may not be copied in any way without obtaining my written permission.
Step One
First Stage, I made a grid on a sheet of water-colour paper and lightly sketch 'male springer' head study. Next I coverd the areas on the head which I wanted to keep white with Masking Fluid. The masking fluid is blue to make it easer to see. I laid in the first wash of colour and started to add darker shades, where needed. This acts as a base colour.
Step Two
Next I started to build the colour in washes and added some detail and colour to the eye, nose and jaw areas.
Step Three
Then I kepted adding the colour in small hair like strokes and added more detail to the eye area.
Step Four
I found the colour still to light so I added two washes over the whole head to darken. When this was dry I started to add more detail in the eye, nose and jaw areas. When this was dry I rubbed away all of the masking fluid.
Final Steps
Finished Painting
To complete my head study of 'Male Springer',I finished the details of the hair around the white areas to blend them in with the rest of the head. To complete my study I finished the detail on the eye, nose and jaw areas.
